Ember Glass is a spectacular modern take on the classic Storm at Sea block, designed by Linda McGibbon of Lakeview Quilting and brought to life in an incredible mix of Tim Holtz Eclectic Elements and Sue Penn Textures for FreeSpirit Fabrics. And whew, this one is a stunner.

At 90" x 90", Ember Glass is a full-on statement quilt, packed with angular movement, layered texture, glowing color, and those gorgeous moments where the piecing seems to shift depending on where your eye lands. Deep blues, teals, turquoise, violet, red, green, gold, charcoal, and warm textural neutrals all work together against a richly distressed backdrop for a quilt that feels both historic and completely contemporary.

The design is based on the traditional Storm at Sea block, but Linda pushes that geometry in all kinds of directions with stars, diamonds, spiraling motifs, and strong architectural borders. Add in Tim Holtz’s weathered, collage-inspired Eclectic Elements prints and Sue Penn’s luminous painterly textures, and the result is basically catnip for anyone who likes quilts with a little grit, color, and personality.

The primary construction method is traditional piecing. The pattern is also compatible with several Studio 180 rulers and the Creative Grids Square on Square Trim Tool for quilters who want additional precision, but those specialty rulers are not required to make the quilt.
