If y’all don’t know about Art Gallery Fabrics’ Canvas, you’re legit missing out. It’s super soft and the prints and colors are phenomenal. They just released a new Look Book for their canvas and it’s chalk-full of awesome ideas and projects.
So of course with this Canvas Party happening, I had to join in the fun and make a project to celebrate. So I cycled through the Rolodex of ideas in my head and had that lightbulb moment occur when I landed on the Drawstring Canvas Backpack and chose the Reminder Bold and Theatre Resonance Plum from AGF’s Pastel Thrift and Bari J.’s Virtuosa respectively.
I wanted to keep the tutorial as simple and clean as possible, while teaching some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way when working with the canvas substrate. Seriously it’ll take longer to watch the tutorial than to make the bag. Click this link or the picture below to watch.
Here’s a list of the specific supplies and fabric cuts that I used in the project.
Supplies
- Cora’s Craft Cord 4mm
- By Annie’s Zipper by the Yard Pewter
- Fall Zipper Pulls
- Wonder Tape
- EZ POINT AND TURNER TOOL – NOTION
- Fabric
Fabric Cuts
- Exterior: Cut two 21″ x 15″ panels – Subcut one panel to 8″ x 15″ & 13″ x 15″
- Pocket Lining: Cut one 10″ x 15″
- Zipper Tabs: Cut two 3″ x 1.5″
- Backpack Loops: Cut two 2″ x 2.5″

I decided to be a goofball and “model” the finished backpacks. Seriously they’re wicked stylish methinks. So get to it and make your own high-utility, super-fancy, easy-peasy Drawstring Canvas Backpack.

Love the bag and the wonderful tutorial. I’v just started following you a could weeks ago after seeing you on the Fat Quarter shop. Love you positive outlook and keeping it real. ?
I’m so silly, I thought the picture where you have the bag on backwards was a halter top over your tshirt! I was like, “that’s a nice halter!”
Wowwwww! Who knew canvas could have such fabulous colors and patterns! Not sure I need a backpack, but I must make this one anyway! And the Look Book! Now you’ve gone and done it. How did you know I was out yesterday looking for a rug? No more. Gonna make that floor cover for sure. Really, really love how you share working with different types of fabrics with us, Mathew. Love you to bits!
Your you tube link says “Private”. How can I view? I love the bag
Contact YouTube and ask them to work on my channel. I was hacked, stolen, and taken down.
Help! I bought all the supplies to make several backpacks for Christmas presents – Any other way to view your tutorial for your drawstring backpack?
