The journey of Helena’s Monarch Butterfly Quilt began when I was asked to be a part of Juliet van der Heijden’s Animal Quilts Blog Tour. At that point, I had only gotten as far as piecing the butterfly, but I knew that I wanted to turn it into a quilt for Helena. I didn’t test the inch square when I printed the pattern, so I accidentally made it like 75% of the size it was supposed to be. Oopsie daisy, test that square folks. So I ended up added a turquoise and black inset border which made it extra ooh la la I think.
After I finished with this portion, I folded it up neatly and put it on a shelf. But like it kept speaking to me, so I eventually clipped it on my wall to stare at. For some reason, I just couldn’t take the leap to quilt it. And on February 28th, it became clear why I hesitated… because Donna of Donna’s Lavender Nest was supposed to quilt it.
On this date, Donna reached out to me for some business advice after she listened to my podcast with Abby Glassenberg. As a long arm quilter, Donna was curious if I had any ideas for her business. Immediately, I suggested reaching out to influencers on social media that fit her aesthetic and offer her services to them in exchange for exposure. And like honestly I wasn’t even thinking about myself when I suggested this, but then she asked if I had anything she could quilt. And low and behold it was staring me in the face.
Seriously, Donna quilted it the day she received it and had it back in the mail by the end of that day. And two days later, it arrived on my doorstep looking more spectacular than I ever could have imagined. Butterflies on a Monarch! Like what the what? But first, those quilted butterflies on the pink cuddle fabric is delicious. And after auditioning a few fabric options, Helena landed on extending the Lavander Water background into the binding. Enjoy this super speedy binding video.
