One Layer Away 50wt Thread Collection by Seth Apter for Aurifil

Seth Apter’s One Layer Away thread collection for Aurifil was created as the companion palette to his One Layer Away fabrics for FreeSpirit, and damn if they didn’t nail it.

Rather than simply matching the fabrics color-for-color, Seth selected ten shades that can both disappear into the collection and stand deliberately on top of it. The palette moves through smoky lavender, pale blue, deep aubergine, slate and grey into turquoise, earthy brown, rust, gold, and soft green. Basically, all of those weathered, layered, slightly unexpected colors that make One Layer Away feel like One Layer Away.

And that distinction matters with Seth’s work. His whole creative language is built around layering, texture, marks, contrast, and allowing one element to interact with another. Thread doesn’t have to be invisible here. It can become another line, another mark, another layer.

The set includes 10 small spools of Aurifil Cotton 50wt, with 220 yards / 200 meters per spool, for a total of 2,200 yards of thread. Aurifil’s 50wt is a fine, strong 2-ply cotton thread and is probably its most versatile weight. It creates beautifully flat seams for machine piecing but is equally at home in quilting, topstitching, appliqué, English paper piecing, embroidery, and other detail work.

So yes, you can absolutely use this to construct a quilt from One Layer Away. But you can also start stitching all over it, which frankly feels much more appropriate.

Seth describes the idea behind One Layer Away as the belief that an artist is often only one additional layer away from the moment when a piece comes together. These threads were curated with that same idea in mind, giving both quilters and mixed-media makers another set of tools for building that next layer.
